👋 Hi there! Welcome to Philosophical Society of Making!
Have you ever wished you received an invitation 💌 to some cool secret
society ? If so, welcome!
But really, what is this all about? The Greek word Poiesis means "to
make" and refers to an activity in which a person brings something into
being that did not exist before. Inspired by that idea, the
Philosophical Society of Making is an experiment in exploring philosophy
🤔 (you know, the pursuit of knowledge - the meaning of life, if a
cheesesteak should have ketchup on it, etc) through making and sharing
what we make with each other. Thinking is great, but there's a special
kind of exploring, learning, expressing, and knowing that comes from
making 🎨 as well.
Why is this happening? Why should I participate? In 2020 with so many of
our rituals and norms being disrupted and changing, perhaps it's also a
good time to consider what type of change we want and what type of
change we can have - to consider our own philosophy. And to explore that
through a bit of playful making 🤹♀️ and co-creation 🙏 with each other!
How will it work? What's involved? I'm sure the society will evolve, but
to start our primary ritual will be a Monthly Make 📆 proposed by the
society's members. For each Monthly Make, members will make something
that explores the month's topic and then exhibit their creation to
participating members. If you don't have time to participate in a given
Monthly Make - that's ok. But the Monthly Make's exhibit will only be
open to participating members. Initially, the society's members will be
invited by Adam and thereafter invited 💌 by it's members - inviting
other people they think would want to participate. So what do you say?
Are you in? You can leave at any time - no explanations, no worries.
🔧 How do Monthly Makes work?
Decide if you're interested. If yes, let Adam know. Adam will send you
an invitation to the society's Slack community and the Slack channel for
the next upcoming Monthly Make!
Make. Or don't make - perhaps just ponder the question for a bit. Sit
with it. Something with come. Once you're inspired, choose any medium to
make something in response to this question. Write a Haiku, paint, make
a video, code, take a photograph, speak words, knit, sing, go on a hike,
bake - whatever! It doesn't need to be fancy or polished.
Post your creation on the Monthly Make's Slack channel by the Gallery
Opening date (by the end of the day) in whatever format you choose. You
can post an image, a video, text, etc - whatever makes sense and
whatever you can imagine. You can also explain your creation or let it
explain itself. It doesn't need to be fancy or polished.
Anytime after the gallery opens, feel free to browse other creations,
react, and discuss if you feel called to do so. Or just observe - up to
you. I can't wait to see what happens! The gallery will hang around for
a while (at least until we run out of free Slack messages).
